Our History
For Randall Oates, MD, founder of SOAPware, Inc, the development of a commercial EHR system was incidental. The idea – born out of simple necessity – took shape during the flu season of 1987, Oates’ third year as a family physician in Springdale, AR. After seeing over 70 patients in a single day, Dr. Oates sat down to complete the mountain of charts waiting on his desk – and quickly found himself repeating the same phrases and sentences over and over again. Determined to find a more efficient way to complete his work, he opened his word processing program and began designing a solution that would streamline the entire process. By 1987, Dr. Oates was employing his custom-built program full-time, printing out prescriptions and completing all of his chart work electronically.
After revealing his ad hoc solution during the 1990 AAFP Scientific Assembly, Dr. Oates was delighted to see his colleagues express interest in his adaptable, user-friendly program. By the end of 1990, 30 doctors were using his prototype to improve workflow and productivity in their own clinics.
In 1992, Dr. Oates combined forces with Greg Lose, then an Apple rep at the University of Arkansas. Together, Lose and Oates – along with now-CEO David Powell – worked tirelessly at transforming the humble program into a commercially-viable product. Dr. Oates’ vision for the future was finally realized in 1995, when SOAPware, Inc. was officially born. Since that time, he has dedicated himself to improving patient care worldwide by empowering physicians with affordable, easy-to-use EHR solutions.

Product Licensing
Because medical providers have more important things to worry about than licensing, SOAPware offers a simplified EMR licensing program based on the number of providers on-site, rather than the number of users or computers. This allows licensed users to install their SOAPware products on any computer (including at home or in the hospital), giving them access to their EMR system anytime, anyplace.
